Hi all! So this week’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about great villains. I’m a firm believer in the notion that a great villain is one that has a point; that’s what makes them so dangerous. (However, a lot of villains are also fun because they’re absolutely bananas). I actually found it quite difficult to do this when just sticking to books, so today’s Top Ten includes tv shows and films.
Ok. So maybe I cheated a little and included 3 people from Game of Thrones as 3 entries, but the whole series is chock full of complicated morally grey characters, so it kind of deserves 3 entries.
To clarify, the villains I’m talking about in the books are:
- Marisa Coulter, His Dark Materials
- Nick & Amy, Gone Girl
- Umbridge & Voldemort, Harry Potter (I don’t think there’s ever been a more hated side character ever)
- Crowley & Aziraphale, and the Four Horsemen
- Nimona, Lord Ballister Blackheart, Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin & The Institution
You can probably tell I love a good antihero, and I’ve got a good mix of genuine villains that you kind of love anyway (read: Moriarty, Magneto, Tywin Lannister), and genuine villains who you’d happily throw off a cliff (read: Umbridge, Voldemort, Ramsay Bolton, Walder Frey, probably Nick and Amy too).
What do you think? Do you disagree with any of these? Is there anyone blindingly obvious that I’ve missed? Let me know in the comments!
